It happened at Culver on the Isle of Wight

Police on the Isle of Wight have confirmed that the body found at the bottom of Culver cliffs is that of missing 20 year old Newport man Robert Hayball.

Formal identification was made by his family who are being kept informed of enquiries by police family liaison officers.

A vehicle, believed to be Mr Hayball's van was spotted going off cliffs at Culver Down in the early hours of this morning.

It's still underwater and police don't think anyone else was inside the vehicle

Mr Hayball's death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

Police were called at 2.52am this morning (Thursday, October 11, 2012) by a member of the public who was concerned for the welfare of Mr Hayball. He was reported to have left home driving a van. Police received information
a short time later that a vehicle had gone over a cliff at Culver.

A vehicle, believed to be Mr Hayball's van, remains underwater off the coast of Culver. Police are considering options for the safe recovery of this vehicle, which is not thought to have been carrying any other people.

Mr Hayball's death is not being treated as suspicious at this time. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later this week. HM Coroner has been informed.

Police would like to thank HM Coastguard, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the RNLI for their assistance.
